John M. Tew, MD
Re-elected to ANA Medical Advisory Board
CINCINNATI – The Acoustic Neuroma Association (ANA) has named John M. Tew, MD, a neurosurgeon with the Mayfield Clinic and Clinical Director of The Neuroscience Institute at the University of Cincinnati and University Hospital, to a third consecutive five-year term on its national Medical Advisory Board. Dr. Tew, who has served as the board’s co-chairman throughout his tenure, will continue in that capacity.
Dr. Tew is a leading expert in the treatment of acoustic neuroma, a benign brain tumor that grows from the sheath of nerves responsible for hearing and balance within the internal auditory canal. Left untreated, an acoustic neuroma can cause damage to other nerves and the brain.
The ANA, located in Cumming, Ga., provides information and support to patients and healthcare providers, promotes research, and promotes early diagnosis and successful treatment by educating the public about symptoms suggestive of acoustic neuroma.
“Dr. Tew is a strong advocate for the ANA to both patients and other physicians,” said ANA Executive Director Judy Vitucci. “In addition to assisting us with medical articles and patient information booklets, he is always available for consultation about current acoustic neuroma treatment options. His extensive background in surgery and radiosurgery is a very real benefit to the ANA.”
Dr. Tew served as Chairman of Neurosurgery at the University of Cincinnati for 20 years before stepping down in 2002 to assume the lead in developing The Neuroscience Institute. He earned his medical degree from Wake Forest University’s Bowman Gray School of Medicine, performed his neurosurgical residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital, and was awarded a fellowship at the University of Zurich. He joined Cincinnati’s Mayfield Clinic in 1969.
The Mayfield Clinic is recognized as one of the nation's leading physician organizations for clinical care, education, and research of the spine and brain. The group includes 20 neurosurgeons and treats 20,000 patients from 35 states and a dozen countries in a typical year. Mayfield's neurosurgeons are active participants in important clinical trials and have pioneered surgical procedures and instrumentation that have revolutionized the medical art of neurosurgery for brain tumors and neurovascular diseases and disorders.
The Neuroscience Institute, an international center of excellence at the University of Cincinnati and University Hospital, is dedicated to patient care, research, education, and the development of new treatments for trauma, stroke, brain and spinal tumors, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.
