John M. Tew, M.D., Seated as Honorary Fellow
By Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland
John M. Tew, M.D., a neurosurgeon with the Mayfield Clinic and Medical Director of The Neuroscience Institute at The University Hospital and the University of Cincinnati (UC), recently became an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr. Tew is only the third honorary neurosurgical fellow ever seated by the prestigious surgical society, which received its first charter from King James IV in 1505.
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, which sets standards for surgical practice and training through the awarding of its coveted diplomas, has more than 15,000 fellows and members throughout the world.
Dr. James Steers, a high-ranking member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a leading neurosurgeon in the United Kingdom, recommended Dr. Tew for the honorary fellowship.
Dr. Tew, a professor of neurosurgery at UC, served as chair of UC's Department of Neurosurgery for 19 years before stepping down in 2001 to take the lead in developing The Neuroscience Institute. Described by his colleagues as "one of the great neurosurgeons of our time," Dr. Tew has helped perfect procedures for treating aneurysms, brain tumors and facial pain; has brought legitimacy to new technologies, including lasers; and has served as a mentor to future generations of neurosurgeons. He is known throughout the world by the world's finest neurosurgeons and revered throughout Cincinnati by patients who have survived because of his surgical skill.
The Mayfield Clinic is recognized as one of the nation's leading physician organizations for clinical care, education, and research of the spine and brain. With 15 neurosurgeons, one neuro-oncologist and one neuro-intensivist, Mayfield treats 20,000 patients from 35 states and 13 countries in a typical year. Mayfield's physicians have pioneered surgical procedures and instrumentation that have revolutionized the medical art of neurosurgery for brain tumors and neurovascular diseases and disorders.
The Neuroscience Institute is a regional center of excellence that embraces nine neuroscience specialties within The University Hospital, the Health Alliance and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. The Institute is dedicated to patient care, research, education and the development of new medical technologies. |
