Tew Named Ohio Neurosurgeon of the Year
CLEVELAND, OHIO- John M. Tew, Jr., MD, neurosurgeon with the Mayfield Clinic, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine, and medical director of The Neuroscience Institute at The University Hospital, was named 2000 Neurosurgeon of the Year by the Ohio State Neurosurgical Society (OSNS) at its annual meeting at the Cleveland Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Saturday, September 9.
Chartered in 1947, the OSNS is one of the oldest state neurosurgical societies in the country and has produced significant leadership to the neurosurgeons in the United States. It currently has more than 136 members from throughout the state of Ohio. Joung H. Lee, MD, neurosurgeon with the Cleveland Clinic, currently serves as president. Dr. Tew has been a member of the OSNS for 31 years and served as its president in 1979. In addition, he has received over 25 honors from around the world, served in 29 professional and scientific societies, attended 36 visiting professorships, given presentations at more than 600 professional meetings and symposia worldwide. In addition, Dr. Tew has authored or co-authored four books, 75 book chapters, nearly 200 journal articles, and over 20 abstracts.
Dr. Tew is not the only Mayfield neurosurgeon to receive this prestigious award. Dr. Stewart Dunsker, also of the Mayfield Clinic, was OSNS president in 1981, and received the Neurosurgeon of the Year Award in 1992. The late Dr. Frank Mayfield, founder of Mayfield, received the OSNS award in 1976.
In August, Dr. Tew announced his plans to step down from chairmanship of the UC Department of Neurosurgery so he could devote more time to his practice of neurosurgery at the Mayfield Clinic, and his role as medical director for The Neuroscience Institute. The Mayfield Clinic is recognized as one of the country's leading physician organizations for clinical care, education, and research of the spine and brain. Over 15,000 patients from throughout the world are treated at the Mayfield Clinic every year, and Mayfield's physicians have pioneered surgical procedures and instrumentation that has revolutionized the medical art of neurosurgery for brain tumors and neurovascular diseases and disorders.
The Mayfield Spine Institute, a subsidiary of the Mayfield Clinic, was launched in 1996, bringing together the largest and most experienced network of spine specialists in the Midwest. Mayfield's multidisciplinary team includes board-certified physicians in neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, and orthopedic surgery, as well as licensed professionals in chiropractic, physical and occupational therapy, and vocational rehabilitation. In 1999, Mayfield introduced the Mayfield Imaging Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky, offering full-service and advanced medical imaging technology. Mayfield has offices throughout Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky. |
