SCAM ALERT UPDATE: 2/25/2016
On February 25, 2016, we sent an email message to those impacted by the email scam. To see the message click here "FOLLOW-UP INFORMATION FROM MAYFIELD CLINIC REGARDING ERRONEOUS EMAIL.
On February 23, 2016, many people received an erroneous email titled "Important Information: invoice 11471" from a hacker posing as Mayfield Clinic. This email was not sent from the Mayfield Clinic. Please be assured that no Mayfield systems were involved and that patient health information was not compromised. The email addresses were obtained by hacking into the database of an outside vendor that distributes emails for Mayfield to our patients, business associates, event attendees, website contacts or other friends of Mayfield. The only information we share with this vendor are email addresses. No health information is shared.
We have learned that if recipients clicked on the attachment of the erroneous email, a download of a cryptolocker/ransomware virus may have occurred. Efforts should be made to remove this virus from your computer. More information on this virus is included in the link below. This link also includes a free download of software to remove this virus.
You can also access this information directly from the Trend Micro website, if you prefer.
We are continuing to monitor the situation, and again want to assure you that no health information was shared. We apologize for any concern or inconvenience this has caused. If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact us at email@example.com.
