Mario Zuccarello, MD, to head University of Cincinnati Department of Neurosurgery as Interim Chair
Philip Theodosopoulos, MD, named Residency Chairman
CINCINNATI – Mario Zuccarello, MD, a Mayfield Clinic neurosurgeon and internationally recognized cerebrovascular specialist, becomes interim chairman of the University of Cincinnati Department of Neurosurgery, effective today.
Dr. Zuccarello is Professor, Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs and Co-Director of the Division of Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery at UC. He also serves as Director of the Neurovascular Program for the UC Neuroscience Institute and as a member of the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Stroke Team.
He replaces Raj Narayan, MD, who is leaving in August to become a professor and neurosurgery chair at the newly created Hofstra University School of Medicine in Hempstead, NY. Dr. Narayan also will serve as director of the Harvey Cushing Institute of Neurosciences at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System.
David Stern, MD, Dean of the UC College of Medicine, made the announcement. Dr. Stern also appointed Philip Theodosopoulos, MD, as Residency Program Director.
Dr. Zuccarello, who joined the Department of Neurosurgery and the Mayfield Clinic in 1993, is a distinguished physician scientist who has published nearly 160 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has given more than 60 presentations at symposia across the globe.
Dr. Zuccarello is dedicated to clinical research in neurovascular disease and the development of new neurosurgical techniques for the treatment of stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, vasospasm, carotid artery disease, and moyamoya disease. While Cincinnati has become widely known for its leadership in stroke
research, treatment, and the development of clot-busting drugs, Dr. Zuccarello has led a quiet revolution in the prevention and treatment of brain hemorrhages, which rank among the most hazardous conditions of the brain.
Dr. Zuccarello graduated summa cum laude from the Gymnasium in Catania, Italy, in 1970. He received his medical degree from the University of Padova, Italy, in 1976, and completed his residency in neurosurgery from Padova, with summa cum laude honors, in 1980. He subsequently performed research fellowships at the University of Iowa and the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, and a clinical fellowship at the University of Cincinnati.
He was named to the Best Doctors in America database in 2005 and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society, in 2001. He received the Distinguished Physicians Award from the Kentucky Nurses Association in 1996 and 1998.
Dr. Theodosopoulos joined Mayfield and the Department of Neurosurgery in 2003 after completing fellowships in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery at Harvard University. He is Director of the Division of Skull Base Surgery at UC and a member of the Brain Tumor Center at the UC Neuroscience Institute.
Raj Narayan, MD, has served as Mayfield Professor and Chairman of the University of Cincinnati Department of Neurosurgery since 2002.
Dr. Stern will appoint a committee to conduct a national search for a permanent chair of the Department of Neurosurgery.
