The graduate education program of the University of Cincinnati and the Mayfield Clinic provides education and training in neurological surgery. The seven-year program includes 6 months General surgery, rotations in Neuro Critical Care, Neurology, Neuroradiology, and Neuropathology.

A large attending staff with diverse expertise administers clinical neurosurgical training at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, which includes University Hospital, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Christ Hospital, and Good Samaritan Hospital. Residents who successfully matriculate become proficient in the use of advanced technologies and techniques in cranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve surgeries. They become expert at clinical evaluation, application, and interpretation of state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures, and they become accomplished in the methods of neuroscience investigation, data analysis, presentation, and publication.
Areas of Specialization
Faculty members’ interests are wide-ranging. Interests advanced clinically and academically are highlighted by their status as divisions within the department. These include: cerebrovascular, epilepsy, neuro-oncology, neurotrauma, pediatric neurosurgery, skull base, spine, and education. Other areas of resident training include neurology, neuropathology, neuroradiology, and radiosurgery.
Residents advance in activity and responsibility at the conclusion of annual performance reviews.
Accreditation
The University of Cincinnati and Mayfield Clinic's program has full approval of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Board of Neurological Surgery for the education of three residents per year.
